Welcome to the neighborhood.

So we are here now in Miami. And being the curious resident that I am, I wanted to know what I was up against. When we find places to live, we try and find safe areas, but having never been to the place it's hard to tell, so we wing it. And hope we make it.

I decided to use Family Watchdog to see how the hood looked.

I have memorized the crime offenders profiles and will be staying clear of anyone that looks like them.

Finally... we are free!

I have mentioned before about living with a roommate. Well I'm going to mention it again.

For those of you who missed it or is new to my life here's how it has been for my husband and I... I'm taking you to the beginning so you can really get a feel.

May 2011- Got married, I moved to Philadelphia to be with my husband (who is also from Oklahoma, but going to eye doctor school there).
February 2012- Moved to Phoenix for husband's first rotation. Lived with my glorious Aunt and it was awesome!
May 2012- Moved to Denver  for 2nd rotation. Lived with a male classmate and while at times wanted to punch myself, it was actually a lot of fun.
August 2012- Moved back to Philadelphia (suburbs this time) for 3rd rotation. Living with a male classmate. ALWAYS want to punch myself. Realizing that our time with our Denver roommate was so great and I would trade him for Philly roommate.
November 2012- Moving to Miami tomorrow for fourth rotation. NO ROOMMATE!!!!! NO ROOMMATE!!!!!

DID YOU READ THAT??? NO ROOMMATE!!!!! We have been married for 18 months and 9 of those months we have had a ROOMMATE!!!!! THAT'S 1/2 OF OUR MARRIAGE. 50%!!! I'm sorry for the all caps typing. I'M SO EXCITED I CAN'T HELP IT!!!
(via)

We will be in Miami until May, then he graduates and we have no idea where to next (everyone pray Oklahoma!). So I guess we technically aren't out of the woods for a roommate free house (do babies count? Don't worry, I'm not planning on that either) but we have 6 months of freedom! No more cleaning up after someone else that isn't my husband, no more trying to get to the remote first, no more throwing away expired food from the refrigerator because our roommate is too dumb to do it on their own, no more wearing a bra!!

I'm freeeeeee!
Bring on the nakedness!!!

The Only Mess I Can Handle

As I've mentioned before, I'm a neat freak who married a slob (is there a nicer way to put that?).  I'm also a neat freak who has spent the past week laying in bed recovering from my back surgery and the fact of the matter is that with me unable to do anything around the house, it's easy for it to very quickly get to a bad state.

I'm pretty much relegated to the bedroom right now, and honestly, I'm surrounded by a super mess.  Stuff is spread out all over, things are piling up, there's an empty Cheeto bag on the nightstand.  But for some reason, it's not really getting to me.  As I looked around the room today, I realized that I think that's because though there is a mess, it's a lovely one.  It's the loveliest mess I've ever seen, because everywhere I look in this room, I feel love and support and memories from family and friends and everyone I love.

Here:
(1) PJ pants I bought on a trip to see my favorite college friends.
(2) My laptop, which has All of the Stuff up on it, this blog that I am so excited to share with Kendra, Heidi, and Sam everyday!
(3) Flowers from my parents and siblings.
(4) A TV from my grandparents.
(5) My husband's biking clothes, which are kinda stinky, but are a great reminder of something he loves to do.
(6) Magazines brought over by sweet friends.
(7) Crosswords sent by my thoughtful cousins.
(8) My phone I've received a million "thinking of you" texts on.
(9) A tapestry my husband brought back from Bonnaroo, a yearly tradition (both him going AND him bringing me back a tapestry)

I feel a lot of things laying on this bed in this room - among them, boredom, restlessness, and discomfort - but I also feel a whole lot of love.  Laying here it's easy to see that love really is all around, even in (and perhaps especially in) the mess.

this love is ours

I instantly thought of Australia when I saw this and immediately sent it to all my friends from the land down under. I haven't seen them actually in person for over a year now. That is just crazy to me! How can they be such a huge part of my life, hold such a huge part of my heart, and yet I haven't actually seen them in the flesh for so long?

It's truly amazing what our hearts are capable of feeling.

I can never go back to that time no matter how hard I try. Things will continue to change and life will always go on and move forward. However, they will always have that part of my life; that part that no one else can really understand, that part that nothing else can touch. Not even time itself. Like a secret shared or an inside joke that would only make sense to us. They may never get to experience any other points of time in my life and same for me with theirs... but, that time, those five and half months, those memories, those cherished experiences, will forever be ours.

What did you think of when you read this quote? Is there a place, a face, a point in time you were taken back to? I would love to hear your stories.

Happy Tuesday you beautiful people.

I Want To Talk About Bedtimes

Okay, so I know that I am a 27-year-old woman (with no children!) and realistically I should have gotten the hang of my own sleeping patterns by this point in my life, but the thing is:  I can't.  No matter what time I go to bed or get up in the morning, I'm tired.  I'm tired all day until it gets to night time, and then I inexplicably just stay awake for no reason at all...when I ought to be going to sleep.  WHAT IS HAPPENING.

Ryan Selvy's Tumblr

Here's what I intend for my schedule to be:
  • In bed by 10:30 PM, read a book for a little while, asleep by 11:00 PM
  • Wake up at 7:00 AM
That's a whole 8 hours of sleep...and seems perfectly doable, right?

Here's what actually usually happens:
  • Think "I should get ready for bed" at 10:00 PM
  • Watch more TV, do more internetting
  • All of a sudden it's 11:30 PM
  • For some reason, continue to be on the internet
  • Get in bed at midnight
  • Set alarm for 6:30 AM
  • Hit snooze until 7:30 AM

So, here's what  I want to know:  What time do you go to bed every night?  Do you have a specific "bedtime"?  Is it different on the weekends?  How much sleep do you get?  If you know the secret to the magic amount of sleep and how to not be tired, what is it?!  Or are we all just doomed to be tired the rest of our lives?

Nakie Time

I haven't had a roommate since the summer of 2009. Sure, I'm married so I don't live alone, but a husband is different than a roommate. Because of our unique crazy life (we move every three months for his rotations) we also have a unique living situation.

When we were living in Phoenix we lived with my aunt. No biggie. It was fun. She's family, she's responsible, she's an adult, she's awesome.. I could go on, but you get it. It was fun.

Currently we are in Denver and we have another roommate. It so happens that one bedroom furnished short term rentals are a lot more expensive than two bedroom places. We live with one of my husband's classmates who works at the same place. This living situation has been a little more difficult than our previous. Okay, a LOT more difficult, and has been challenging. But I'm not here to complain (I'll save that for later).

What I am here to say is that our roommate was out of town a few weeks ago for four days and IT WAS THE BEST TIME IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS WE HAVE HAD!!! Let's just say I hate putting on pants to get a glass of water. Also wearing a bra (I don't even need one my boobs are size child anyway) to grab a bowl of cereal is so annoying. It's almost like I have become Tobias from Arrested Development. A NEVER-NUDE!

But not for those four, glorious days. We were basically our own nudist colony. TMI? Who cares. It was awesome.

No roommate for four days, people!!! FOUR DAYS!!! I didn't wear pants or a bra (or much of anything else if you know what I mean, bow chicka bow wow...). We lounged on the couch, watched whatever television we wanted, left our dirty dishes around (okay no, I didn't, but I could have and not cared), and had sex. Yes, we had sex everyday and it was awesome. It's way more difficult to do with a roommate in the house.

It was just what we needed. Four days of just us. All you married people who live alone with no kids or roommates... That's the life. Enjoy it.

We say that our roommate is preparing us for having children in the house. And if kids are anything like roommates, we are not ready. At all.

When do the parents ever have sex?

My House Isn't Clean, But It Could Be...In 5 Minutes

found here
I spent the first two years of my marriage feeling really freaked out about the state of our home.  Despite my best efforts, we just cannot keep the place picked up and free of clutter.  This is just happens when a neat freak (me) marries someone who doesn’t give a second thought to leaving dirty dishes on the coffee table for days at a time (him).

I’ve begged and pushed and pleaded and tried to convince my other half that tidy-ness is the way to go, to no avail.  I’ve proposed a “compromise” many times, but all I really meant was that I didn’t want to compromise at all, I just wanted our belongings to be put in their proper places at all times.  Oh, how easy it is to confuse “Let’s compromise” with “Just do it my way like I’ve told you a million times and then everything will be fine and I’ll be happy again.”

However!  Recently, I’ve developed what I like to call the 5-Minute System.  This three-part system makes it much easier for my neat-and-tidy self to live with (and truly be okay with) our not-always-neat-and-tidy home.  Here’s how it goes:

5-Minute Rule:  We never let our house get cluttered enough that we couldn’t make it completely presentable in 5 minutes or less.  The theory is that as long as we have 5 minutes of warning for company coming over, we’ll be good to go.  No panicking, just a quick sweep and we’re ready!

5-Minute Pick-Up:  If the Rule isn’t currently in effect and the clutter is building up too much, we take five minutes to pick up as much as we can.  We do this once or twice a week.  We literally set the kitchen timer for 5 minutes and both work to pick things up around the living room and in our bedroom and put things back in their proper place or throw them away (you know, like the Dr. Pepper cans that have inexplicably collected on the coffee table).  Once the timer goes off, we’re done for the night and, usually, order has been restored enough to live with once again.  If not, do it again the next night!

5-Minute Tasks:  Throughout the week, I’ve assigned one 5 minute task to each day that’s quick and easy to complete (some of the tasks are actually in the 10-15 minute range, but we’ll say they take 5 minutes so I don’t have to change my system’s name).  By spreading out these tasks throughout the week, it prevents me from having to have one big clean-fest over the weekend, plus the rotation helps keep things somewhat presentable at all times.  Here’s my list (keep in mind, as of now we live in a 2-bedroom, 1-bath apartment, so I don’t have that much space to deal with!):

Monday:  Wash/fold bathroom towels
Tuesday:  Dust
Wednesday:  Clean kitchen (I wipe down the counters and do dishes everyday, but this is for sweeping and Swiffering the floor, clearing out the fridge, scrubbing the stovetop, etc.)
Thursday:  Clean bathroom
Friday:  every 3rd Friday, I wash and change our bedsheets (all the other Fridays, I get a break!)
Saturday:  Vacuum
Sunday:  Ironing

There you have it!  Do we have a perfect household?  Not even close.  Is this system good enough for me?  Most the time, and I’m learning to let go my OCD grip to make sure that it is good enough for me.  Or more importantly, for both of us.
